When to Replace Your Opener12/20/2016 Back To Blog
Garage door maintenance does not have to be a drag—greasing the door tracks and the cable drum as well as other basic tasks can be carried out infrequently and quickly. A more significant part of the maintenance is changing the automatic door opener, and while not necessary regularly, it can sometimes become very important to do it.
Home and Personal Security
Older overhead garage door openers are vulnerable. Thieves can fairly easily detect the remote-control code used to open it by using a special device, and once they have it, they can open the door. Newer openers have something called a rolling code. This means, that the code will change every time the door is opened. It adds security as the code cannot simply be detected.
Broken or Missing Safety Reversal
If you garage door opener either does not have a safety reversal feature, or it is no longer working, replacing the opener is urgent. Since the early nineties, openers have featured a safety reversal mechanism. It operates through two sensors, six inches above the floor. If the signal between the sensors is interrupted, the door will stop, avoiding injury or accident.
Adding Battery Backup
If the power in the house is lost for some reason, the garage door will sometimes be impossible to open. Newer garage door openers come with a battery backup system, enabling the user to open the door with no power in the rest of the house. Being unable to open the garage door is a major inconvenience, and upgrading your opener can solve this issue.
Lack of Keypad
Newer garage door openers can be fitted with a keypad on the outside, allowing you to open the door without having to lug around a key for the purpose. Some will even have fingerprint detectors, avoiding the need to remember a code. In some cases, it is possible to retrofit a keypad to an older opener, but if not, an upgrade can definitely add this feature to your setup.
Whether it is due to security reasons, a desire for added functionality, or simply to replace a worn system, replacing your garage door opener is a very infrequent but necessary step in maintaining the setup. Openers are generally simple mechanisms, but they are crucial in many regards. Looking after them and maintaining them properly is important, and so is keeping up to date with the newest advancement.
